Our country gives us so much. One meaningful way to give back is by being there for others when they need us. Donating blood may seem like a small step, but it can make a real difference in someone’s life.

Whether you’re donating for the first time or have donated before, this is your chance to take part in an act of kindness that brings our community together.

Why Is Blood Donation Important?

Blood and its components are essential for patients who need transfusions, whether following accidents or surgery or as part of their medical care.

Your donation helps hospitals maintain the blood supplies patients depend on. Every donation is tested before use, and donors undergo a health assessment to determine whether they’re eligible to donate that day.

Remember: donating blood is more than a simple procedure. It’s a meaningful way to help save lives.

What Are the Different Types of Blood Donation?

There are different ways to donate blood, and the donation team can help determine which option is suitable for you.

  • Whole blood donation: The most common type of donation. The collected blood is separated into components, including red blood cells, platelets, and plasma, to support patients with different needs.
  • Platelet donation: Platelets help control bleeding and are needed by some patients with cancer, blood disorders, and those undergoing bone marrow transplants. Because platelets have a short shelf life, regular donations are important.

How to Prepare for Blood Donation

A few simple steps can help make your donation experience easier:

  • Drink water: Stay hydrated before your appointment. Drinking around 500 ml of water beforehand may help, if appropriate for you.
  • Eat a healthy meal: Don’t donate on an empty stomach. Choose a balanced meal and avoid fatty foods.
  • Get enough sleep: A good night’s rest helps you prepare for your donation.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise: Give your body a break from intense workouts before donating.
  • Bring your identification: Take your national ID, residency ID, or another form of identification accepted by the donation center.

Who Can Donate Blood?

General eligibility criteria include:

  • Being between 18 and 65 years old, subject to the donation center’s requirements.
  • Weighing at least 50 kg.
  • Passing the donor questionnaire and medical screening.
  • Meeting the health requirements for donation on that day.

Eligibility may vary depending on your health, medications, recent travel, and other factors. Answer all screening questions honestly and follow the donation team’s advice. They’ll determine whether you’re eligible to donate.

What Should You Do After Donating?

Once you’ve donated, give your body time to rest and recover.

  • Stay at the donation center until the staff confirms you can leave.
  • Drink extra fluids over the next 24 hours.
  • Avoid smoking for at least one hour after donating. Avoiding smoking altogether is better for your health.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for the rest of the day.
  • If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down until you feel better. Seek help if the symptoms persist.
  • If bleeding from the needle site continues or you experience unusual symptoms, contact the donation center or seek medical care when needed.

If your job involves heavy physical work or operating heavy machinery, ask the donation center when it’s appropriate to return to work.

The recommended interval before your next donation depends on the type of donation and your health. Check with your donation center before booking your next appointment.

Giving Back Starts with One Step

Our country deserves our generosity, and sometimes one small action can mean so much to someone else.

If you’re medically eligible, consider donating blood and encourage your family and friends to do the same. Your encouragement could inspire someone else to take that first step.

In recognition of your humanitarian contribution to the Crown Prince’s Blood Donation Campaign, Avnzor is offering donors a 20% discount.

After donating, share your proof of donation to claim the discount, subject to the campaign’s terms and conditions.

Because giving back isn’t just about words. It’s about taking action that makes a difference.

Please check with your blood donation center for eligibility requirements and health instructions before donating.
